What is happening in 3/4 classroom

Oscar working in class

It has been an enjoyable and busy term so far in 3/4H. Our class has established a calm and supportive learning environment, with students following daily routines and engaging in class discussions and challenging learning tasks.

We begin our literacy sessions each morning with guided reading and independent tasks. Our reading groups are supported by Ms Cowan and allow us to work with students on reading strategies, comprehension and discussion skills. Year 3/4 work on a journal every day to demonstrate gradual improvements in their independent writing. The topics students write about come under one of four categories: recount, creative, critical thinking/explanation and wonder/questioning.

During our whole class writing lessons we focused on persuasive texts and understanding how to develop 3 reasons and examples, to support a persuasive argument. We have also explored the technical and sophisticated language used in persuasive texts.

Over the past six weeks students in 3/4 have been developing skills in mathematics to enhance their use of addition and subtraction strategies, understanding the relationship between multiplication and division as identifying the properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects. Students have enjoyed accessing our Mathletics subscriptions to explore these concepts as well as practice using online tools for assessment and revision. It is always interesting when we reflect on assessment tasks and review them as a whole class, students often pick up areas they may misunderstood or not read completely. This allows them to build connections between errors and learning for future attempts.

The past two weeks have seen a number of exciting events occur for our class and the whole school; Surf School, art workshops, the soccer gala day and the Safe on Social sessions have been valuable, engaging and sociable learning experiences for our students. It has been a wonderful start to the year!
